Sunrise: A Song of Two Humans

The power of #cinema is how the universal can be revealed even as the obvious unfolds.

Here is a scene from FW Murnau’s “Sunrise” (1927). The subtitle is “A Song of Two Humans” The Man has contemplated the most dire thoughts about the Woman, his wife, and their marriage, from infidelity to murder. The scene captures the simple optimism of love and the more complex ideas regret and forgiveness.

In 1927, there were two best picture oscars: Best production, which was given to “Wings” and Best Unique and Artistic Production, which was given to “Sunrise.” It was the only film to win that latter award; it was discontinued the following year.
